![]() It’s what been happening with Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, which has a black Puerto Rican superhero protecting New York City. Now, we can spend hours debating whether or not Electronic Arts should or should not have released a new version of an old game in which you play as a cop who would be killing people, and racers who would be killing cops, if this game was the least bit realistic. Which not only includes slamming into them and causing them to crash, but also using spike strips, setting up roadblocks, calling in helicopters, and even using an EMP. Along with the illegal street races, this has events where you get to be the police, and have to take out the street racers by any means necessary. Sometimes you also get to violate police procedure. Not all of Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered is spent breaking the law, though. Hence why, during some races, you have to try to outrun the cops, or cause them to get into the same kind of horrific, “How could anyone survive that?!?” crashes you got into with that nice old lady who was just driving to church. Including, apparently, buying some really expensive sports cars and then ramming them into you. Which is why, as you run these illegal street races, you have to watch out for people driving to work or the store, lest you find yourself in a rather horrific crash you’d never walk away from if this wasn’t a racing game.Įxcept that unlike other racing games - including others where you’ve also engaged in illegal street races - the fictional but picturesque Seacrest County where Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered takes place has a vigilant and well-funded police force that will do what they can to stop you. Like the original, Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered has you driving real cars on roads that have not been closed off or cleared of traffic. Remade for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC, this new version of the 2010 classic is as much fun as the original, even if it does lack some of the depth of modern racing games. Which seems like a real oversight, if Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered is any indication. On the bright side, the game only costs about $40 and if you have friends to play with, I would still recommend this game. While fans of first-person shooters, survival horror games, and even sci-fi racing games have all gotten to play new versions of old favorites lately, the same hasn’t been true for people who want to virtually race real-world cars on realistic streets or race tracks. ![]() While this can be fixed (and I imagine the team is working on many of these bugs), it just feels like a bummer to have them at launch. Sadly, EA seems to have slacked on the debugging before the release of the game allowing for some missions early on to literally be unplayable. Arcade racers can be a lot of fun and being able to get 8 people together for some fun regardless of their platform is a huge bonus for me. Unfortunately, those aren’t the only bugs I’ve come across, but they’re probably the most infuriating. When the game loaded, it ended up swapping us though so I was the cop and he was the racer. I also went to do a 1v1 game with my friend and they chose to be the cop and I was going to be the racer. Also, every time I try to do the Escape to the Beach police mission, the game freezes while loading and I have to kill the game and restart it. I’m not sure if this is still a problem, but wanted to include it in case anyone else runs into the problem. I found that I had to say “no” and then go to setting to enable cross-play. ![]() For instance, when I went to start the game, it asked if I wanted to enable cross-play and every time I said yes, the game froze and crashed. There have been a fair number of bugs that I’ve come across which really just frustrate players. So, are there any downsides to NFS: Hot Pursuit Remastered? Sadly, the answer is yes. Did I still have a lot of fun racing to it? Yes. In addition, I was caught off guard by how much I enjoyed the soundtrack. The remaster enjoys higher-res models, shadows, reflections, and more to support 60FPS at 4K resolution. Also, there’s cross-play support so you and your friends can play regardless of what platform you each prefer. This variety helps the game feel fresh and not get stale very quickly. There are a variety of game modes including races, running away from cops, being the cops and trying to catch troublemakers, and more. It’s not trying to be realistic, it’s just being fun. It’s an arcade racing game instead of a simulation one like Forza or Gran Turismo which means that it’s not the most realistic racing game, but that’s not a bad thing. NFS: Hot Pursuit Remastered was my first foray into the NFS franchise.
